The fourth-generation Kia Sorento arrived for 2021 with a complete redesign that gave the SUV a bolder appearance and a much more premium feel. It adopted Kia's sharper styling language, grew about two inches longer, and became a true three-row midsize SUV with enough interior space for adults in the first and second rows.

The engine lineup changed from prior years. Base LX and S models now featured a 191-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder, while EX and SX trims upgraded to a 281-hp turbocharged 2.5-liter. Both pair with an eight-speed automatic. Kia also replaced the previous V6 with a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and an electric motor for a combined 227 horsepower available in S and EX trims.

Available quilted leather upholstery, wood-look trim, and larger displays helped the Sorento compete with more expensive rivals. Even the entry-level LX came standard with features like push-button start, smart cruise control, and a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance tech. Higher trims added heated front seats, second-row captain's chairs, a panoramic sunroof, surround-view cameras, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and rear automatic braking.

Kia continued expanding the lineup in '22 with the addition of the Sorento PHEV. Its 13.8-kWh battery and electric motor delivered up to 32 miles of electric-only driving, while the combined system produced 261 horses. The same year also introduced the rugged X-Line models with standard AWD, additional ground clearance, unique styling, multiple terrain modes, and upgraded wheels. In 2024, Kia revised the SUV's front end, updated its infotainment and digital displays, and added the off-road-focused X-Pro SX Prestige AWD with all-terrain tires.

The third-generation Sorento marked the model's transition toward the midsize SUV segment. It offered more passenger room and improved cabin materials. At the time, buyers had three engine choices. The base L and LX used a 185-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder, while EX and SX trims offered a 240-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter engine. A 290-hp 3.3-liter V6 topped the lineup and is still the best option for buyers who regularly carry passengers or use the third-row seats.

Safety equipment also expanded; the Sorrento added rear parking sensors, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive headlights.

The lineup remained relatively consistent through most of its production run. For 2019, Kia introduced an eight-speed automatic with the V6, made the third-row seat standard, and discontinued the turbocharged four-cylinder. A mild styling refresh followed for 2020, along with a simplified trim lineup.
